Long Island Homeowner Guide

Wood vs Vinyl Fence:
Which Is Right for Your Property?

Real cost numbers, honest trade-offs, and the specific factors that matter on Long Island. From a crew that installs both every week.

The short answer

Choose vinyl if you want zero maintenance and a clean, consistent look for 25+ years. Choose cedar wood if you want a natural appearance with the warmth and grain of real wood and are willing to stain it every few years.

Both are solid choices for Long Island. The wrong choice isn't one or the other — it's cheap wood or cheap vinyl. Bad materials will fail in 5 to 8 years in Long Island's climate regardless of style.

Long Island-specific factors

These are the things that matter specifically for Long Island properties and aren't covered in most fence comparison articles:

Salt air near the coast

If your property is within 1 mile of the ocean or bay, salt air accelerates wood oxidation and metal fastener corrosion. Vinyl is immune to salt air. Cedar holds up reasonably well but needs more frequent staining in coastal locations.

Sandy soil and frost heave

Long Island's sandy loam doesn't hold posts as firmly as clay soil in other regions. This is why posts need to be set deeper here — 24 to 30 inches minimum. Both wood and vinyl need proper post depth and concrete setting to avoid heave.

Deer chewing and rubbing

In eastern Suffolk County, deer actively rub against fence posts and chew wood railings. Cedar gets scarred by deer rubs. Vinyl is impervious to this. If you have a deer pressure problem, vinyl wins on durability.

HOA and permit approvals

Many Long Island HOAs specify fence materials. Some specifically require wood for a neighborhood aesthetic. Check your HOA rules before choosing.

When to choose wood

  • You want the look of natural wood grain and texture
  • You have a specific architectural style (colonial, craftsman) that vinyl doesn't match
  • Your HOA requires wood
  • You're okay with staining every 4 to 5 years
  • You're planning to sell within 10 years and want lower upfront cost

When to choose vinyl

  • You want truly zero maintenance (never paint, never stain)
  • You're near the water and worried about salt air on wood
  • You have dogs that might chew or rub against the fence
  • You're keeping the property long-term and want lowest lifetime cost
  • You want a clean, uniform, consistent look that won't vary by board

FAQ

Is vinyl or wood fence cheaper?

Wood is generally cheaper upfront: $18 to $38 per linear foot for cedar stockade versus $28 to $45 for vinyl privacy. But over a 20-year period, vinyl wins because it requires zero maintenance spend. A wood fence needs staining every 3 to 5 years ($500 to $1,500 per application) and eventual post replacement.

Which fence looks better, wood or vinyl?

Natural wood has a warmth and texture that vinyl cannot fully replicate. If you want the authentic natural look, cedar wins. If you want clean, uniform appearance with zero variation, vinyl wins. Vinyl cannot warp, fade unevenly, or develop grain character over time, which is either a pro or a con depending on your aesthetic preference.

Does vinyl fence hold up in Long Island winters?

Good quality triple-wall vinyl handles Long Island winters fine. The risk is cheap single-wall vinyl, which can become brittle in sustained cold and crack on impact. We use commercial-grade vinyl with UV inhibitors. It handles freeze-thaw cycles without issue.

Which fence is better for dogs?

Vinyl slightly edges out wood for dog containment because there are no boards to chew through (it's more difficult), and the solid panels have no gaps. Wood stockade can develop gaps as boards warp. For determined diggers, neither vinyl nor wood solves the problem without burying wire mesh along the base.
